At Darley Churchtown we use 'Letters and Sounds' as the basis for our phonics teaching. However, to accommodate a range of learning styles, we also use some aspects of 'Jolly Phonics' and 'Read, Write Inc'.
Our Reading Co-ordinator is Mrs Hayes, who works in Class 3 alongside Miss Critchlow. Most mornings, after Collective Worship, Class 1 and Class 2 break into five 'Phonics' groups, depending on the skills and ability of each child.
A range of resources are used including interactive games and activities from the 'Phonics Play' website. We support children's reading development with the use of a reading scheme - the 'Oxford Reading Tree' - but this is supplemented with books from a range of other schemes. These books are arranged by 'book bands', depending on the level of reading ability required for each band. A link to how these bands work is included below.
If you have any questions or concerns about phonics or reading, please speak to your child's class teacher, who will be able to share information with you about your child's progress.
